Benjahminthefaff AKA Ben Muthee is a Kenyan born, South African raised and trained afro artist based in Johannesburg South Africa. A full time urban artist, who studied at Boston media house in sandton Johannesburg. He was introduced to art as a young boy in his formative years in Nairobi Kenya, through natural curiosity where he soon discovered he could draw very well from an early age. His art skills were explored and moderately honed in his later primary school years. He fondly recalls that his 5th grade English teacher Mrs. Brown encouraged him to enter several regional interschool art competitions. He frequently did well and was among the top three in most of these competitions. Throughout he’s high school career at Queens high school he was fully immersed in the arts and studied art right through to graduation. After graduation, he interned at a few fine art galleries before pursuing he’s studies in radio and television production.
After graduation he’s biggest obstacle was getting employment in the media world and did a few odd jobs to get by such as bar tending, waiting on tables and promotions to name but a few. In 2010, he found himself working as technician in security and fire industry, although a fascinating and challenging industry he was not passionate about it and found it difficult to be motivated. In 2014 he began working part time with he’s best friend and co-founder of BLACKFAFF (founded in 2008 by Ben Muthee, Thabiso hadebe, Bradley Jackson) Mr. Thabiso Hadebe in the field of sneaker customization. He eventually went on to become a full time artist in 2016 and has not looked back since.
With collaborations and work done for major brands such as CONVERSE, JAMESON, J&B, SHESHA, EDGARS(EDCON), POP BOTTLES_SA, HANSA, THE CROSS TRAINER, SUPERGA, NANDOS, PLAY ENERGY, SPRITE, COCA COLA, LEROY MERLIN,NIKE and CUSTOM ZONE to name but a few. He has also collaborated with urban artist across Johannesburg such as Blackfaff, Motion Canvass, Customize_me_gent, Gregg243 and Sbudaeh, among doing work for a large number of private clients. These collaborations and private work have contributed to his growth as an artist and influenced him to develop he’s own unique style that he refers to as new school afro art.
